Bond Dickinson advises on major Newcastle development

Construction of Science Central is well underway as legal adviser, as Bond Dickinson continues to play a key role in the project.

The 24-acre mixed use development, situated on the former Scottish & Newcastle Brewery site in the centre of Newcastle, s set to become a hub for scientific businesses, research and innovation, whilst also offering leisure, retail and residential uses.

The development is being delivered by Newcastle Science City, a partnership between Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council.

Since being appointed, lawyers from across Bond Dickinson’s real estate, planning, construction, commercial and procurement teams have provided expert advice to ensure  the successful development of this site.

Construction of the first building on Science Central, The Core, is now well underway.

An additional £50 million investment by Newcastle University on site will create a state-of-the-art ‘living laboratory’ where new technologies and research will be trialled from 2017.

Construction Director Ian Atkinson, part of the team advising on the project, commented: “This is a massive project for Newcastle, central to reinforcing its reputation as a smart future city and we are thrilled to be a part of it. Â We were first involved when discussions between the University and the Council were in their infancy, so it is very exciting to see the project through to this stage.”

Fiona Standfield, Director of Newcastle Science City said: “We are appreciative of the advice provided by Bond Dickinson on the Science Central development, which will see the creation of a brand new quarter in the city, connecting the West End to the city centre once more.“

Science Central is a phased developed over the course of a number of years, and the first building, The Core, is due to open for business this Autumn.
