Teesside builders work on £200k leisure centre upgrades

A Teesside building company has started work on upgrading a popular public leisure centre in Middlesbrough.

Hartlepool-based Gus Robinson Developments is refurbishing the Middlesbrough Council-owned Rainbow Leisure Centre in Hemlington.

The 16-week programme, which started in May and is costing £200,000, is scheduled to be completed in early August.

The project will see an improved reception area to improve energy efficiency, installation of a new phone system to improve customer service and a remodelling of the library to allow for increased opening hours.

Councillor Tracy Harvey, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “In Middlesbrough we pride ourselves on providing first class leisure and fitness facilities, and the Rainbow is one of our flagship venues.

“I have recently joined the gym here myself and think the facilities are wonderful.

“These improvements will definitely enhance our existing members’ experience and will also help to attract new customers to the leisure centre.

“After visiting today to see the work improvements I am looking forward to returning to see it completed.

“In the meantime I’d like to apologise to users for any inconvenience they may experience while this important work is carried out.”
