Billion pound Growth Deal funding to kickstart East Leeds Extension of 70k homes
Funding announced as part of the £1 billion Growth Deal governement funding is set to kickstart regeneration and housing in Leeds, starting with the East Leeds Extension.
The East Leeds Extension is the city’s largest single allocated site for housing development and is expected to make a significant contribution to the overall city-wide requirement for 70,000 new homes by 2028.
The funding will enable preparatory site works and relocation of council facilities to provide land for the East Leeds Orbital Road, with further funds to assist the development of brownfield sites in other parts of East Leeds.
Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership has made a commitment to secure at least £64.5 million of other funding, mainly from developers, with central government adding up to £5.1 million (£2.6m in 2015/16) to kick start development in this area, as part of the wider investment plan for the region.
Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for neighbourhoods, planning and personnel said: “I’m delighted the government have listened to the really strong case we have made for the funds and freedom which will allow us to make sure we can deliver long term strategic housing, infrastructure and development.
“These will form a major part of the Leeds economy in coming decades. “Of course, these plans are about more than roads, homes and businesses. Local residents will expect high quality design, space standards and connectivity. Through our role in the planning process we are seeking to share this vision with all developers in Leeds.” “This project will require clear strategy for providing green space, local retail, health and active recreation, new school places, public transport facilities and for pedestrian and cycle routes.” Leeds City Council has already committed to make the most of its role in ensuring community infrastructure to support housing development is provided in the right locations and at the right times.
