Infinity Digital Chosen To Trial Innovative Smartphone App In Schools
Rotherham-based marketing specialist, Infinity Digital, has been appointed by Sheffield company NTScience Ltd to launch the trial of an innovative smartphone app in schools throughout the region.
The NTScience app is a unique learning aid designed to help secondary school pupils expand their science vocabulary by hunting for scientific keywords in a series of 36 customisable word search puzzles.
Jon Frost, developer of the app and owner of NTScience Ltd, explains: “NTScience Wordsearch is an interactive smartphone app that helps children to remember hundreds of key words that will come up in science classes and tests mainly between the ages of 11 and 14. By making the challenge of learning science vocabulary fun, we hope to see a significant improvement in pupil’s attainment in STEM subjects, which are now taking centre stage in the curriculum.”
Infinity Digital is co-ordinating the regional trial of the app in Secondary schools, as well as a number of selected Primary schools, where it is being used to prepare Year 6 pupils for the transition to Key Stage 3.
Emma Dixon, Vice Principal and Science Leader at St John’s Academy, in Brighouse, said: “Our year 6 are excited to be taking part in the development of new learning resources. They are proud to be able to give their voice regarding their likes and dislikes…one pupil noted no-one has ever asked us to do anything like this before.”
Keisha Barnes, Key Stage 3 Science Coordinator at Wath Secondary School in Rotherham, said: “We were keen to take part in the trial as it will support the vocabulary development and literacy skills of our students in order to prepare them for the demands of GSCE science. We are trialing it with children of all different abilities.”
The NTScience Wordsearch app includes a choice of three visual skins, including a ‘super clear’ design that has been developed specifically for children on the dyslexic spectrum. Varied difficultly levels and ‘best time’ functionality makes the app challenging and engaging for all abilities.
Rebecca Coupe, Marketing Consultant and Owner of Infinity Digital, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response from local schools who have jumped at the opportunity to introduce this innovative smartphone app into the classroom to aid their pupils. It’s great to see local companies and schools working together to develop new technologies that could raise attainment in STEM subjects, as well as the wider curriculum.”
Every school involved in the trial is receiving support from Infinity Digital’s specialist Business Development Manager, Linda Ruddock, a former Primary School teacher and Deputy Head with over 20 years experience in education.
The trial is due to be completed in July 2014 with results to be published later in the year. The app is available for all teachers, pupils and parents to download from iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. For more information visit www.ntscience.co.uk
