School pupils welcome special guest to Dylan Thomas Centenary film premiere

School children from Llangwm, near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire will be welcoming a very special guest to their film premiere this week. Hannah Ellis, granddaughter of Dylan Thomas, who was interviewed as part of the film the children made celebrating the Centenary of her Grandfather, has accepted an invitation to come to the school and be a part of this very special film premiere.

Headteacher of Cleddau Reach VC Primary School Nick Groves explained that the children, who are all part of the after school film club, had worked incredibly hard writing and producing the documentary for the Pembrokeshire Film Festival, however the festival was cancelled at short notice, but it is hoped the film can be entered into the IntoFilm Cymru Festival 2014 later in the year.

“Film club is really popular in the school. Children in Years 2 to 6 have watched a wide range of films from contemporary animations to Laurel and Hardy and thoroughly enjoy themselves. As well as learning about writing film reviews they have the opportunity to get involved in other activities such as storyboarding, and film production.

It was decided to create a documentary about Dylan Thomas as this is his Centenary year, encouraging the children to take inspiration from his words and create their own as they explore their village of Llangwm. Through the process of writing and producing the film the children have learnt some fantastic skills and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We are absolutely delighted with the end result and very excited to be welcoming Hannah Ellis to the school.“

As part of the documentary titled ‘A sense of place: finding the poetry in our own community’ some of the pupils visited and filmed in Laugharne and were fortunate to be given the opportunity to go inside the writing shed of Dylan Thomas just above the Boathouse. Several pupils also met Hannah in Laugharne and the full interview with her will also be shown.

The film premiere takes place at the school this Friday as an invitation only event.
