Rotherham's Xeros aiding in US environmental initiative

A South Yorkshire-based company which develops clothes laundering technology is helping to establish a US environmental incentive.

After launching its system last October in the US, Rotherham-based Xeros, innovator of a virtually waterless commercial laundry system, has now announced the first energy efficiency incentive by a US utility to one of its customers.

Independent water, natural gas and electric company, Liberty Utilities has paid a $28,000 incentive under its Natural Gas Energy Efficiency programme to one of New England’s largest commercial laundries, Sterling Linen Services.

Supported by the Federal Energy Management Program’s Energy Efficiency Incentive Program, the payment enables customers in certain US states to apply for financial incentives to install energy efficient washing machines.

Sterling installed the Xeros Commercial Laundry System, which uses recyclable and reusable polymer beads largely as an alternative to water, in its headquarters.

Bill Westwater, chief executive officer, Xeros, said: “This first incentive payment received by one of our customers is a significant development underlying the environmental benefits of the Xeros technology.

“It ensures not only that our customers make financial savings but they also reduce energy and water usage – all while providing superior cleaning results. We look forward to working with utility companies on future incentives for their customers using Xeros technology.”

The environmental incentive payment builds upon the foothold that Xeros established early in the US market since opening an office there last autumn in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Last month, Xeros was named as a qualified vendor for Choice Hotels International which has 5,000 franchises in the US, and whose brands include Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality and Sleep Inn, among others.

Xeros had already supplied washing systems to four of North America’s top six hotel chains including one of the world’s largest hospitality group’s, Chicago-based Hyatt and Wyndham.

Xeros says it is manufacturing and marketing the first genuine innovation in hotel sector laundering for 60 years, thanks to the polymer beads’ ability to gently agitate stain and soil from textile surfaces. The beads’ resilience means they can be used for hundreds of washes, without losing their effectiveness.

The organisation has received a growing list of accolades in recognition of its work, most recently University Spin-Out of the Year in the New Energy & Cleantech Awards 2014, and Bronze in the Energy/Sustainability category at the Edison Awards 2014 in San Francisco, CA.
