Teesside firms win three-year street light contract

Two Teesside firms are celebrating after picking up a three-year contract to install super-efficient street lighting which is hoped will save £1.8million a year.

Stockton Council’s £14 million programme to install the lights across the Borough is already under way.

In a period of just over three years, 28,000 lanterns will be replaced with modern LED lighting units.

Valmont Stainton Limited, based on Teesside Industrial Estate, won a contract to manufacture the street lighting columns.

Stainton Lighting Design Services, meanwhile, also located on Teesside Industrial Estate, won the design contract.

They will be responsible for redesigning individual streets to ensure the lighting columns are strategically placed so streets are lit to the British Standard.

Once completed, the scheme will generate projected savings of around £1.8m a year.

The scheme is split into seven phases with the wards with the greatest percentage of columns more than 40 years starting first.

Some areas will only need lantern replacements but others will also involve the addition, reduction or replacement of street lighting columns.

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith, said: “This scheme is yet another example of how we can work towards the savings we need to make in the long term while also making sure Stockton Borough remains a fantastic place to live, work and learn.

“The new LEDs generate a better quality of light, have a longer lifespan, use less energy than the current bulbs, are fully recyclable and contain no toxic materials which makes them far more environmentally friendly.

“I’m delighted that local businesses have been appointed as it means that the project is not only helping the Council to generate savings, it is also supporting the local supply chain and safeguarding jobs in Stockton Borough too.”
