Business benefits of cloud computing with AWS

Mark Jackson, sales manager of Perfect Image - a North East-based IT services company delivering tailored solutions and services to organisations across the UK, helping them to improve their businesses through the effective use of IT – discusses the business benefits of cloud computing powered by internet giant, Amazon.

After more than 10 years of building highly scalable web applications, Amazon – the internet giant – became extremely skilled in operating massive-scale infrastructures and data centres. So much so, they decided to offer their expertise to organisations as a suite of web services – and so Amazon Web Services (AWS) was born.

AWS has been operating since 2006 and today serves hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. In 10 regions with multiple availability zones, AWS provides low cost, instant, on-demand access to the same multi-billion dollar web-based computing services used by amazon.com.

Did you know, AWS is growing so quickly that every day the organisation has to add the same computing power as was their entire infrastructure back in 2006, when Amazon was a $6billion company? That’s a lot of computing power…

What’s more, despite the ever-growing platform, it is one of the most cost-effective cloud-based IT solutions available to businesses today. In fact, Amazon recently announced its 42nd price reduction is 2006.

Using AWS, organisations can purchase additional computing power with Amazon EC2, data storage with Amazon S3, and other services like Amazon Glacier. These additional packages offer great flexibility, so users can choose the development platform or programme model that makes the most sense for their business, helping them to achieve their business objectives.

Undoubtedly, AWS’s biggest selling point is that it offers a true cloud-based IT solution. Like you would a utility in your own home, you only pay for what you use, with no upfront expense or long term commitments. But don’t take my word for it: Gartner – the world’s leading IT research and advisory company – sited AWS as a lead cloud computing company in ‘completeness of vision and ability to execute’.

With true cloud computing, anything is possible - AWS can be used in a number of different ways. Examples include (but in no way are limited to) running entire IT functions to delivering a particular application or website. AWS can also be used in more innovative ways, such as extending existing data centres to meet varying demand, or providing a backup data centre for business continuity needs.
