House builder wins big at Northern construction industry awards

A house builder has scooped two prestigious titles at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

Story Homes, which has main offices in Newcastle and Carlisle, won Best High Volume New Housing Development at the awards for its Woodlands development in Shotley Bridge.

Barry Spedding (pictured above), meanwhile, won the LABC Warranty Regional Site Manager of the Year award for his work on the Mabel Wood development in Great Clifton, Cumbria.

Northern Area Contracts Manager Richard Cannon said: “Awards like this mean a lot as we at Story Homes pride ourselves on build quality and quality of design.

“It’s made us well-regarded in the North East and it makes people want to come and see our developments.

“We’re all part of a good team. We love to win awards and we wouldn’t be able to do that without our staff and the people who work with us.

“It’s been great working in the North East. I regularly go on site at Shotley Bridge, people seem happy to be working there and it shows in the final development.

“Customer feedback has been good. The customers are delighted with the build and their new homes - it’s a real pleasure to see.”

Barry, 50, who has worked at Story Homes for three years, was up against other site managers from across the Northern Region. He will now go on to compete for the national title of LABC Site Manager of the Year.

Barry, from Workington, Cumbria, added: “I was rather surprised to be nominated and then to win the award just blew me away.

“I knew I’d been nominated and really I was delighted about it. To be nominated for an award like this by anybody tells you that you’re doing something right.”

LABC is a membership organisation representing all local authority building control departments in England and Wales.

LABC Warranty is the provider of structural warranties for new build homes, and the LABC awards recognise and reward exceptional sites and site management across the UK.

The regional awards are an opportunity for industry leaders to celebrate the excellent work of the construction industry within the Northern region.

Woodlands in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, is being built on the former Shotley Bridge Hospital site. The development is currently moving into its second stage of development.
