The real navy rum hosts a party like no other at The Roundhouse in Camden

July 31, 1970. It is six bells in the forenoon watch – or 11am to us land-lovers. ‘Up spirits’ has just been shouted from the rafters for the last time. It is Black Tot Day, a sad date on the calendar for any sailor. This historic event remembers the last day on which the Royal Navy issued sailors with a daily rum ration – aka the ‘tot’, traditionally a sip of Pusser’s rum. Some wore black armbands, rum was ‘buried at sea’ and, in one navy training camp, a mock funeral procession was held complete with accompanying drummers and piper. Black Tot Day and naval rum, are both hugely symbolic to Britain and remain a part of our heritage.

Pusser’s, the original navy rum, is honouring its roots by celebrating Black Tot Day in style on The Beach at Camden’s Roundhouse – a Grade II listed former railway engine shed in Chalk Farm, London.
