Career boost for mature apprentice

A 48-year old high flying businesswoman has successfully enhanced her career prospects and employability thanks to an adult apprenticeship.

Donna Quarmby from Warrington has gained a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Housing with the help of Chorley-based Runshaw Business Centre.

As services manager at Buckshaw Village-based Oakbridge Retirement Village, Donna supervises independent and assisted living, which includes housekeeping, hospitality, housing and catering functions.

Donna said: “I’ve gained a wealth of experience throughout my 31-year career and wanted to obtain a nationally-recognised qualification that matched my specific skill-set and would help me take the next step in my career.

“I initially thought apprenticeships were reserved for young people between the ages of 16 and 24 and didn’t realise that they’re available to help everyone gain the qualifications they need, regardless of their age.

“I’ve had a fantastic experience completing my apprenticeship with Runshaw Business Centre and hope to recruit an apprentice at Oakbridge Retirement Village in the coming months.”

The Oakbridge Retirement Village provides luxury accommodation for the over 55s.

Adrian Roscoe, business centre manager at Runshaw College, added: “Each year tens of thousands of adults use Apprenticeships to gain the qualifications they need to progress and increase their earning potential.

“According to statistics, additional training and development can help to increase your annual salary by up to £3,000.

“The National Audit Office (NAO) also estimates that adult apprenticeships offer the UK economy an £18 return for every £1 spent, which demonstrates their huge potential.

“In today’s competitive job market, qualifications can be just as important as life experience, which is why we’re urging people to gain both.”
