York’s Willian Anelay Ltd completes £1.7 million renovation of luxury hotel
York-based building contractors Willian Anelay Ltd have completed the £1.7 million renovation of the Judges Lodgings hotel in York.
Lanchashire based Daniel Thwaites PLC own the hotel, a Grade I listed Georgian townhouse, and closed its doors in January before reopening as one of Thwaites Inns of Character in July.
The work carried out by York based William Anelay includes the demolition of a function suite extension built in the 1970’s and the addition of five new contemporary styled bedrooms featuring glazed frontages, timber deck roofing and larch cladding.
In addition two new bedrooms were created within the main building as a result of remodelling, new kitchen and food prep areas and every bedroom within the hotel was upgraded in some way.
Originally a private residence, the Judges Lodgings provided accommodation for judges sitting in the Assize Courts from 1806 until the 1970’s when it became a hotel. The building is thought to have been designed by Lord Burlington and was completed in 1726.
William Anelay Ltd completed a five month long structural restoration programme at the venue last May.
Anelay’s contracts manager Nigel Kynaston commented “The work we carried out has transformed the Judges Lodgings with stylish and contemporary new bedrooms added and a comprehensive reordering of existing facilities.
“It will become one of the premier hotel venues in the city.”
Founded in 1747, William Anelay Ltd is one of the oldest construction companies in the world. Based in York and Manchester, the company employs over 100 staff and has a turnover of £30 million.
