Next phase of Whitley Bay’s regeneration project is unveiled

North Tyneside Council is working alongside neighbouring businesses in the next phase of its regeneration of the Spanish City Dome and Whitley Bay seafront.

The developments will include removing the Boardwalk Café building at Watts Slope to significantly improve the views towards St Mary’s Lighthouse and provide a gateway onto the Northern Promenade.

North Tyneside Council reports that it has made several attempts to work alongside the previous tenants of the Boardwalk Café, but this has unfortunately proven to be unsuccessful.

There will also be a new kiosk on the seafront to replace the cafe, offering refreshments for beach goers.

Carlton Clubs Ltd currently owns the bingo hall next door, which as the Empress Ballroom was historically part of the overall Spanish City site. The council has been working with the firm since 2008 to reach an agreement over some areas between the two buildings and some historical rights of access.

Elected Mayor for North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn said: “We are delighted to announce the next stage in our plans to further improve the seafront at Whitley Bay and deliver a successful future for the town.

“This is another important milestone in our work to build on the heritage and character of the town whilst delivering the essential improvements that are needed to make sure Whitley Bay is an attractive and appealing visitor destination.”

North Tyneside Council is working with the Heritage Lottery Fund and Coastal Communities Fund to bring the iconic coastal landmark back into use for the benefit of the local community, and hopes to see restoration completed by 2016.
