£600k proposed backpacker hostel development for York city centre

A £600k redevelopment proposal is being considered by the owners of Monroe’s public house on Gillygate in York city centre.

The proposed development will involve investment in excess of £600,000 by the landlord to completely transform the current operation.

A new ground floor bar with lounge facilities will be created to the ground floor with hostel style dormitory letting accommodation providing 50 bed spaces.

The owning company commented that “being on the inner road close to the coach park, universities, museums and backing onto York Minster, this is an ideal central position to create a public house and hostel operation.

“Whilst the landlord is willing to undertake significant investment, we are seeking a tenant or a partner to work alongside throughout the development and for the continued operation of the business.”

Simon Hall of Fleurets leisure property specialist said: “This is a substantial and impressive redevelopment proposal. With its York city centre position it would undoubtedly provide much needed value based accommodation for a whole variety of travellers, backpackers, students, revellers, tourists and the like, and high levels of occupancy and profitability can be expected.”
