Malton Town Hall in £380k restoration to make the town ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’

Malton’s town hall has been restored in a £380k revamp and the owners are now planning to use it as a “lynchpin” to develop Malton as Yorkshire’s ‘Food Capital.’

Fitzwilliam Malton Estate was appointed to the Grade II listed Town Hall has been restored and is now available for a business seeking to open in Malton’s town centre.

Leisure property specialists Fleurets have been instructed to find a suitable operator for the flagship property, which has a guide rent of £50k per annum.

Simon Hall, head of pubs and director at Fleurets Leeds Office, said: “This is a great opportunity for a high quality operator who is keen to launch a flagship restaurant, bar or café.

“The market square itself is a crucial hub for the whole town, which attracts customers from Malton, York and Scarborough, as well from the rest of the UK and abroad.”

The attractive market town also has two hours free parking, funded by the not-for-profit Malton Community Interest Company.

Keith Davies, building surveyor with the Estate, said: “Following the extensive refurbishment, including opening up the masonry and glazing the arches, we believe that the building has retained its 18th century feel, yet is geared for the 21st century.”

Roddy Bushell, estate manager, explained: “This is a unique opportunity for someone interested in opening a stylish business in the centre of a bustling market town.

“The Town Hall could be a lynch-pin of the ethos of Malton being widely regarded as Yorkshire’s Food Capital.”

The Town Hall provides 3,230sq ft over two floors and many of its original features have been retained, reflecting the heritage and character of the impressive building. Local craftsmen including skilled stonemasons have helped with the transformation.

Malton, which is in the heart of the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, is a popular market town which is host to a busy events calendar.

The annual Malton Food Lovers Festival inspired Antonio Carluccio to describe the town as Yorkshire’s Food Capital, and attracts around 20,000 visitors during the two-day event.

The celebrated Monthly Food Markets showcase top quality food and drink from artisan producers. Talbot Yard is a recently refurbished hub of food units opposite the Talbot Hotel, which also incorporates the James Martin Restaurant.
