University lecture space solved with modular build

The number of students attending university in the UK has risen steadily over the last decade. In fact in 2013, the highest level of entrants were recorded with almost 496,000 students beginning full time undergraduate courses.[1]

As further teaching space is required to meet the rising number of students wishing to attend university, permanent modular buildings are becoming progressively popular in providing a rapid and cost-effective solution.

For the second consecutive year, Roan Building Solutions embarked on a project for Bournemouth University to extend an existing building to increase the number of lecture suites available for the last academic year.

Completed in 14 weeks with just eight weeks spent on site, Roan delivered a new two-storey building made up of six new lecture suites. This followed on from the completion of a previous project by Roan in the summer of 2012 which included six lecture suites complete with suspended ceiling tiles and AV installation.

In-line with the university’s green policies, the new academic building was developed to BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for environmentally sustainable buildings.

“Modular build is becoming a popular construction solution for the education sector at the moment due to the simple fact that it is much faster than traditional build. It provides an efficient and long term solution”, says Matthew Goff, UK sales director at Roan.

“One of the major benefits about offsite build is that it has 90% less vehicle movements compared to traditional build and with this project, the majority of work was carried out offsite with only six weeks spent on site.

“The speed of the project enabled the university to meet the demand for extra lecture space within a short timeframe whilst keeping the safety of its students and staff front of mind.”

As part of the contract, project works included a full mechanical and electrical fit-out, a building management system to allow for the efficient running of the building, an alarm and fire system, access system, lightning protection, external steps and a ramp.

The building was completed in Plastisol to match nearby buildings, providing a long-lasting and durable finish.
