ENER-G addresses best practice in energy efficiency and CHP at Healthcare Estates

UK energy management and combined heat and power (CHP) specialist ENER-G will present its expertise at Healthcare Estates 2014 in Manchester this October (7-8).

Paul Doherty, from ENER-G’s specialist healthcare division, will present a conference paper entitled ‘Infrastructure Considerations for Energy Saving Projects’ at 10.35am on 8 October.

He will advise on the various issues and considerations to be made when reviewing an energy strategy or embarking on an energy saving programme, including issues such as: plantrooms; (layouts, connections and improvements); how to maximise the possibilities of existing infrastructure, and ensuring that site disruption is minimised.

The paper will discuss the strategic fit of energy saving and energy improvement measures within a given site. It will take into consideration the reduction of maintenance backlog, meeting statutory carbon reduction targets, reducing carbon payments (tax) and the best approach to replacing time expired plant. Additionally it will cover organisational issues, such as business continuity. This will include how to reduce the risk of interruption to clinical services and minimise organisational risks, while making financial savings from the improvements and improving the overall environmental credibility of both the site and the Trust.

The session will demonstrate some worked examples and how different hospitals and Trusts have benefited from these considerations. It will also explore the importance of assigning sufficient time to fully understanding the existing infrastructure and what can be improved, before embarking on an energy saving project.

Nick Provost, Project Development Manager, will also take to the stage to advise on best practice in energy management. He will make a presentation at 11am on 7 October at the Energy Zone theatre, which is part of the free-to-attend exhibition.

He will present a case study on ENER-G’s £6.3 million green makeover of Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals - part of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

ENER-G has designed, built and will operate new high efficiency, low carbon infrastructure comprising natural gas CHPs, lighting, pumps, chillers, boiler plant and brand new heating distribution systems.

Utilising the Carbon and Energy Fund framework, the 15-year contract is guaranteed to deliver gross annual cost savings of £1.2m. It will also reduce the Trust’s carbon footprint by approximately 6,200 tonnes per year across the two sites. This is equivalent to the environmental benefit of removing 3,900 cars from the road, or the carbon sequestered annually by 5,082 acres of forest.

Nick will explain how the scheme was developed and implemented to combine a range of demand-side measures with CHP to achieve total projected energy savings of around 30%.

The presentation will be hosted in the Energy Zone theatre as part of the Healthcare Estates exhibition, which is free to attend. The programme for the Energy Zone has been programmed by the Carbon and Energy Fund and BRE . ENER-G is exhibiting at the event and will be showcasing its portfolio of more than 50 CHP-led integrated energy saving projects.
