Make it ‘social’ this Saturday urges SEWM

Thousands of social enterprises across the West Midlands will be looking to attract new customers and boost sales this weekend (September 13th) as part of a major new national initiative.

‘Social Saturday’ will look to raise the spotlight on one of the economy’s fastest growing sectors by holding a number of activities designed to persuade consumers to spend their money where it makes the most difference to people and local communities.

To raise awareness of the day, Social Enterprise West Midlands (SEWM) has teamed up with a number of local entrepreneurs to produce short videos to promote their services and products.

Aidem Digital, Midlands Together CIC, Miss Macaroon and Beat it Percussion have already taken advantage and will have their ‘adverts’ displayed across SEWM’s YouTube channel and social media throughout the duration of Saturday.

“It’s not too late for other social enterprises to get involved,” explained Melanie Mills, Chief Executive of SEWM.

“All you need is a smart phone or iPad and get someone to film you talking about your business and why ‘Social Saturday’ is such a good idea. Send it to us and we’ll promote it to our network of thousands of subscribers.”

She continued: “There’s some outstanding social businesses in the region that offer excellent products and services…we just need to let more people know about them.

“Buying social can help local community groups deliver essential services, provide vital training for people or fund leisure facilities that wouldn’t normally be possible.”

Chris White MP For Warwick and Leamington and author of the Social Value Act, commented:

“I am delighted to support Social Saturday, which takes place across the country this weekend.

“The West Midlands has long been a leader in the social enterprise sector and an example for other regions to follow. Melanie Mills and the staff at SEWM should be congratulated for all their hard work to promote the day and I look forward to supporting what is now an annual event.”

Social Enterprise West Midlands is the leading business network and consultancy for social enterprise in the region.

The membership-led organisation offers access to expert consultancy, advice and guidance, as well as a series of event and workshops designed to educate, inform and promote a sector that is worth more than £35m locally.

It also offers event management support and was instrumental - with its parent organisation The Aspire Group - in the launch of www.buysocialdirectory.org.uk, the UK’s first social business directory.
