Taylor&Emmet sponsors major showcase of local art

Sheffield’s Taylor&Emmet LLP is joining forces with the city’s museums and galleries to stage the first retrospective in 30 years focusing on local artist, Stanley Royle.

The solicitors are sponsoring a major exhibition, created by Museums Sheffield, of Royle’s finest paintings, many of which depict the city and surrounding countryside.

Held at the Graves Gallery from December 13 this year to May 30 2015, the show will demonstrate Sheffield’s impressive collection of landscapes painted by Royle, including key works, such as Morning on the Derbyshire Moors (1920) and his last painting, Mevagissey, Cornwall (1960). It will explore the development of his vibrant technique and highlight the influence of Sheffield artists on the wider world.

Stanley Royle (1888 to 1961) was a significant landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy. He spent his formative years in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield and attended the city’s School of Art where he went on to teach. Royle depicted many local scenes threatened by industrialisation, before moving to Canada in 1931 to pursue his teaching career. He returned to Britain in 1945 and continued to paint prolifically.

Ceris Morris, head of fundraising at Museums Sheffield, added: “Taylor&Emmet’s backing is giving our Stanley Royle retrospective a significant boost and we are hugely grateful to the firm for its interest and support of our work. We hold the largest collection of Royle’s paintings in the country and we are thrilled to be giving the people of Sheffield an opportunity to see them as one exhibition after such a long time.”
