Good food awards for Newcastle’s Broad Chare

Newcastle’s Broad Chare pub has received a national accolade – winning the prestigious Editor Award for Best New Entry for in the Good Food Guide’s top 50 UK pubs.

The Quayside venue was also listed 20th in the 2015 Top 50 UK Pubs guide, produced by Waitrose, and based on ratings by customer feedback.

Only one other North East pub – the Bay Horse, in Hurworth, County Durham, was listed in the Top 50 UK pubs.

Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor of the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2015, said: “There’s a wealth of pubs and restaurants right across the board. Particular acknowledgement goes to all the new entries, especially award winner The Broad Chare, and to the high standards of all North East restaurants in the Guide.”

This is the latest accolade for the Newcastle pub, part of Terry Laybourne’s successful 21 Hospitality Group and a creative partnership with Live Theatre. The Broad Chare was one of just two North East venues to receive a Bib Gourmand in the 2013 Michelin Guide. This accolade is awarded to establishments that serve good food at a moderate price. It was also Newcastle’s first pub to be listed in the Michelin Good Pub Guide, published at the end of 2011.

Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne said: “We’re delighted to receive further national recognition for our pub. These latest awards reflect the dedication and hard work put in by the team led by Chris Eagle in the kitchen and Steve Dunn in front of house.

“Our ethos is simple. We are a proper pub, offering proper beer and food. The skill is in the simplicity and our focus on trying to get it right every day of the week.

“There’s some very strong competition around today, regionally and nationally, so to win the ‘Best New Entry for Pubs’ is particularly satisfying. Newcastle can now boast to be offering some great food and beers from a diverse range of exciting new venues.”

The Broad Chare was named one of the best gastropubs in Britain in the prestigious industry poll The ‘Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropubs Awards 2013’, compiled by leading pub trade magazine the Publican’s Morning Advertiser. Included in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide in 2012.

The Broad Chare, which opened in May 2011, is located in a Grade II listed building on Newcastle’s Quayside dating back to the 17th century, giving the pub a natural, quirky charm. The pub is a creative partnership between 21 Hospitality Group and Live Theatre. The pub places an emphasis on serving the best wholesome food with real ales and craft beers from the local region and around the world.
