Liverpool John Moores University strengthens ties with China to boost Marine business

Liverpool John Moores University has signed a deal to strengthen ties with Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in China covering research projects in the maritime sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding strengthens a relationship between WUT and LJMU that stretches back over ten years.

The two universities have already collaborated on a number of joint research projects in marine technology, engineering and maritime logistics including two on-going EU FP7 projects on supply chain integration and maritime safety respectively, worth a total of €1million.

The agreement will facilitate the development of research and teaching collaboration at the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations.

WUT is located in Wuhan, the economic and cultural centre in Central China. It is ranked as the 49th best Asian university and 10th best in China and in the top 400 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014.

A delegation of officials from WUT toured the teaching and research facilities within the LJMU’s School of Engineering Technology and Maritime Operations.

They also visited the research institute, Liverpool Logistics Offshore and Marine Research Institute, where Professor Yan gave a research seminar sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering Innovations in technologies for marine power systems.

Professor Xinping Yan, Vice President of WUT, said: “This visit has encouraged us to make LJMU our main university partner in the UK in the future.

“We will direct our students to pursue their doctoral research and postgraduate study at LJMU. We will make every effort to make use of the currently available resources at WUT to facilitate the development.”

Dr Edward Harcourt, LJMU’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement said: “We were delighted to mark the maturity of our relationship to WUT by signing two new agreements for joint PhD and MSc study during Professor Yan’s recent visit.

“Our link to Wuhan University of Technology stretches back more than ten years and the joint research projects between our two universities provide a very strong basis on which to build.”
