Dewsbury coffee house first to receive funding designed to regenerate vacant sites

A startup coffee house in Dewsbury has become the first recipient of additional business rate relief under a new scheme from Kirklees Council.

Novo Coffee House, based at 12 Longcauseway, opened in July and is already proving to be a very popular addition to Dewsbury town centre.

The new Business Rate Relief Scheme, launched earlier this year, aims to encourage long term investment in the town centre by attracting new, sustainable, start-up businesses as well as creating jobs and improving Dewsbury’s retail offering.

The relief, up to £2,000, is targeted at specific vacant properties which have been empty for a long period of time or are very prominent.

Rate relief under the scheme will only be granted if the vacant ground floor shop unit of the eligible properties is re-occupied by a new start-up business or by an existing business which opens an additional branch in one of the above properties.

The relief is awarded for one year and is conditional on the new business continuing trading for at least a year.
