Jet2 to move flights to Manchester Airport following Blackpool closure
As of Friday, 26 extra flights a week will fly out of Manchester Airport following the closure of Blackpool Airport earlier this week.
All flights are operated by Jet2.Com, which is planning to switch two aircraft from Blackpool to Manchester from as of Friday.
Blackpool Airport owners Balfour Beatty had attempted to save it with a last-ditch attempt in August to find a buyer and secure its future.
No buyer came forward and they are now closing commercial operations while looking at regeneration possibilities for the site.
Blackpool services include Jet2.Com, which flies to 10 destinations, Aer Lingus to Dublin and City Wing to Belfast and the Isle of Man.
Experts warned the closure of the airport - which traces its roots back as far as 1909 - will badly damage the north west economy.
A spokesman said: “We are saddened and disappointed to hear that Blackpool Airport will close. Although the airport remains open until October 15, the uncertainly over its future has not only caused confusion for our customers but has also significantly impacted on the operation of our aircraft, including the withdrawal of key third party facilities without notice.
“In order to minimise the disruption to our customers we have made the decision to move all flights that were scheduled to depart from and return to Blackpool Airport from Friday, to Manchester Airport instead.
“As an airline which has been committed to Blackpool for more than eight years, we regret having to make this decision ahead of its closure on 15th October, but our priority is ensuring that the air travel plans of both our Jet2.com and Jet2holidays customers are protected. We are also in discussion with our colleagues at the airport who are affected.”
Owner of Blackpool Airport, Balfour Beatty, said in a statement: “Unfortunately, there is no option for the company other than to close.
“This is a very sad day for the airport which has a proud aviation history and a loyal, appreciative customer following.
“We would like to thank all our dedicated staff who have delivered exceptional service to passengers for many years.”
