National Trust projects for NE historic restorers

A County Durham-based specialist repair company has recently completed prestigious projects for the National Trust across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

Stone Technical Services (STS) has been carrying out the works to protect and maintain various structures, which are popular visitor attractions.

In Tyne and Wear, STS’s maintenance and facilities management team is completing roof repairs and general maintenance at Wallington Hall near Morpeth. The hall, dating back to the 1800s, was home to the Trevelyan family and houses many pre-Raphaelite paintings. It’s now a popular tourist attraction and wedding venue.

In Rothbury, STS is working at Cragside House to complete a range of general repairs as well as a full inspection of the Victorian property which was the first in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and is still full of gadgets and open to the public.

And in Tyne and Wear, STS’s high level repair specialists are working at Penshaw Monument carrying out roof repairs on the 70 feet high folly, close to Sunderland, which dates back to 1844.

STS is a leader in the specialist field of historic, high level and specialist maintenance as well as lightning protection and industrial steeplejack services.

The company, whose HQ are on Kellaw Road in Darlington, works with clients including St Paul’s Cathedral, York Museum’s Trust, the NHS, English Heritage, Darlington Council and Newcastle City Council, amongst others.

STS has a team of 37 with plans for this to top 40 before the end of 2014.

MD of STS, Dave Stone, said: “It’s a privilege to be able to work on these historic structures which require the most delicate of repair methods. We only use traditional methods and the team is vastly experienced in the sensitivities of working on such buildings and we also have a range of skills which ensure the project is delivered cost effectively and efficiently with little or no disruption.”

Earlier this year, STS announced its most successful first quarter of its 15 year history after achieving £1 million in new contracts during the first three months of the 2014, which it’s hoped will boost the business’s turnover by around 50% over the next 12 months.

STS is now well ahead of financial projections for 2014 and has already achieved half of last year’s £2 million turnover.

As well as its Darlington HQ, the company has offices in Edinburgh, central London and Cheshire.
