Londoners expect housing and employment situation to worsen for next generation

Far more Londoners expect the next generation to be in a worse position with regards to homes and jobs, a poll by YouGov has revealed.

The environment and pollution problem is also believed to get worse, despite efforts to tackle these issues.

Londoners also believe the city’s public transport city will continue to deteriorate, even though several billions is being spent to improve the Tube and launch the Crossrail in 2018.

The city’s population is expected to hit 10 million within the next 15 years and Londoners believe schools, hospitals and GP services will worsen as a result.

70% of people think the housing crisis will get worse, with just eight per cent saying it will ease.

42% of people believe that job prospects will be bleaker, with just 19% expecting improvement.

Environmental issues will be worse, say nearly half of those surveyed, compared with just 14% who expect the city to be cleaner.

UKIP supporters are the most negative about the outlook, with 78% believing the job situation in the city will worsen and 59% believing the health services will deteriorate.

Tanya Abraham of YouGov said: “Most people believe things will be grimmer for the next generation of Londoners, especially when it comes to housing,”

“However, younger people are more likely to be optimistic about a brighter future in terms of jobs, public transport and schools than the older generation.”
