Yorkshire sees 7.2% rise in wages as job market improves

The average wage in Yorkshire and The Humber now comes in at £30,558, a 7.2% annual increase according to a new report by jobs search engine Adzuna.

Only the South West and and North East beat the region in England, whilst Wales showed the biggest increase in the UK coming in at £30,351.

London and Scotland were at the bottom of the list, with wages in London only seeing a 1.6% increase to £42,747, whilst Scotland saw a 0.7% decrease in wages to £33,067 p/a.

Both the North East and Yorkshire and The Humber experienced far higher year-on-year average salary growth than London and the South East.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “The northern powerhouses our politicians seem so desperate to see are beginning to pick up pace in economic growth.

“Although starting from a low base due to particular hardship after the recession, it is encouraging to see more good news for the North.

“We still have a long way to go until we see a truly geographically balanced economy, but renewed infrastructure efforts in the North will help. In the meantime, expect the gap continuing to close at a steady rate as London’s salary growth remains sluggish.”

Nationally, advertised salaries rise 2% year-on-year in September to £34,695, outpacing CPI inflation of 1.7%

Competition for jobs fell to a post-recession low, with 1.02 jobseekers for every advertised vacancy in September, compared to 1.86 in September 2013.

Thirty cities in the UK now have more vacancies than jobseekers, as recovery spreads out across the nation including Warrington and Manchester.
