Allerton Steel wins contract to develop earthquake-proof facility

Northallerton-based steel fabrication firm Allerton Steel has won a contract to manufacture and paint a series of 40metre rafters for part of an earthquake-proof facility in Cheshire.

The company, who employs 135 staff and turns over £10 million per annum, is a member of NOF Energy the business development organisation for oil, gas, nuclear and offshore renewables and is displaying increasing commitment to reducing its impact on the environment.

Managing director, Giles Penn, said: “The initial contract was for 28 20m plate girders, but we manufacture thousands of tonnes of plate girders each year, so we had the skills and space to join each pair of 20m into a 40m beam, so save the site a significant amount of time and cost to assemble and weld the girders into the finished 40m rafter.

“We are making one beam a week for 14 weeks, sending them down to AV Dawson on Teesside where we can paint them and then they are delivered to URENCO ChemPlants, based in Capenhurst, where a Tails Management Facility is being constructed.

“They will form the support for a new roof, and will be covered with 1400te concrete on the roof alone to fulfil the seismic requirement.

“Seeing our workers outside the factory with their cameras as the beams moved off showed to me just how proud we all are. It’s another landmark project and we know there are many more to come.”

NOF Energy’s business development manager, Paul Livingstone, said: “NOF Energy members like Allerton Steel are continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

“To keep leading the way in the oil, gas, nuclear and offshore sectors, there must be no limits to what can be achieved and our companies have the skills and leadership to keep showing the way forward for the rest of the world.”
