Science network partners with digital health firm to bring breakthrough technology to region
The North West Coast Academic Health Science Network (NWC AHSN) is partnering with digital medicines company Proteus Digital HealthTM to assist the firm in bringing its revolutionary digital health product to healthcare services and patients across the North West.
Proteus is pioneering a new category of products, services and data systems based on integrating medicines with ingestible, wearable, mobile and cloud computing.
The system provides an unprecedented view into an individual’s personal health choices and physiologic response, allowing patients to better manage their health and more effectively collaborate with clinicians.
The NWC AHSN is working closely with the US-based company by enabling collaboration with healthcare organisations across the region and ensuring success through appointment of a dedicated project manager.
Dr Liz Mear, NWC AHSN CEO, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Proteus on its journey to enter into the healthcare sector in the region.
“This sort of breakthrough technology has a very important role to play in the future of healthcare – helping to create real operational efficiencies and enabling people to take a proactive approach to managing their healthcare.”
“Around 50 per cent of the medicine prescribed in the UK is not taken correctly, which has huge health implications for patients and affects the way clinicians prescribe.
“Apart from the obvious practical benefits, this technology has the potential to massively reform the way we prescribe medication for both common and more serious conditions and create a new, much more efficient and effective way of monitoring treatment - with great benefits for general health of the population.
“We’re very excited to be leading the charge and working with this incredibly innovative company to bring this technology to the North West Coast.
“North East and North Cumbria AHSN is already working with us and we look forward to potentially seeing Proteus’ technology being taken up across the healthcare system in the UK.”
The Proteus system is now being used at 15 locations across the UK, including the Pendle View Medical Centre in Lancashire.
Julian Bradwell, General Manager UK, Proteus Digital Health, said: “We are working closely with health care providers to ensure that our product drives significant cost savings to NHS England.
“Our focus is on demonstrating value to patients and providers in the treatment of hypertension and related co-morbidities such as diabetes.
“Our goals are very closely aligned with those of the NWC AHSN and we are confident that this partnership will help us to develop deep links across the healthcare system.”
The NWC AHSN is one of 15 academic health science networks in England. One of its areas of operations involves working as part of the NHS to enable innovative products to spread quickly and successfully through the NHS, by supporting would-be suppliers with practical and strategic advice and support as they look to tap into the market.
