Yorkshire property developer acquires astrologer's former York home for £800k

Yorkshire property developer The Oakgate Group, has acquired a Grade II* listed building in Stonegate, York, for £800k from world-famous astrologer Jonathan Cainer.

35 Stonegate, which dates back to the 15th century, is currently being comprehensively refurbished and will become a high-quality retail outlet restaurant.

John Grantham, chief executive of Oakgate, who are based in Wetherby, explained: “When we heard that Jonathan Cainer wanted to sell 35 Stonegate, we were immediately interested. Stonegate is arguably Yorkshire’s most prestigious retail street and this is the 11th deal we have completed on Stonegate, starting in the 1980s.”

“This building is an absolute gem, with a rich and varied history. Once we have completed our sensitive interior and exterior refurbishment programme, which includes a new glazed courtyard area, there will be prime retail and leisure space to let in the very heart of York.

“The building itself comprises three floors, with an attic. The ground floor, which will incorporate the glazed courtyard, has total of 1,550 sq ft. The first and second floors are approx. 850 sq ft each and the attic is 300 sq ft.

“The interior of 35 Stonegate, including some priceless stained glass and wooden panelling, is utterly unique and would provide the perfect home for a premier retailer or quality restaurant operator. It is very distinctive, containing, as it does, centuries of history,” said Mr Grantham. “We expect strong levels of interest from across the UK.”

Daily Mail astrologer Jonathan Cainer, who lives in nearby Fulford, bought the premises in 1999. He said: “I have sadly had to sell the building due to my need to keep supporting various philanthropic and charitable causes, all of which require high levels of funds.”

35 Stonegate will be ready for occupation in January 2015
