Contractors start on next phase of The Majestic rebuild after blaze destroys Leeds building

The next phase of the rebuild at The Majestic building in Leeds, which saw a blaze destroy the prominent city centre landmark at the end of September, is set to begin.

This phase will see scaffolding erected around the building, which is owned by Leeds based property company Rushbond, so that external support work can begin.

The work is being carried out by Leeds-based building contractor Wetheralds, working in conjunction with building services engineering and environmental consultancy BSCP.

Following on from this work the damaged roof structure will be removed and debris from inside the building will be cleared.

Mark Finch, director of real estate at the firm says: “Following the fire and after the initial evaluation, our key priority is to protect the building before we start removing the roof and clearing the debris inside, which we expect to do in the coming months.

“Once this is complete we will be able to properly assess the true extent of the damage and provide a further update.

“This is an incredibly complex situation that involves extensive planning and management.

“Due to the building’s prime location on City Square, some disruption may occur but we’re working closely with Leeds City Council to minimise this and apologise for any inconvenience it may cause.”
