Student travelling Tinker Fisher Award applications soon to open
The 2015 Tinker Fisher Awards will be open on November 10th for applications. The University of Huddersfield and Kirklees College students are encouraged to be ambitious in their applications for funding oversees trips.
The Tinker Fisher Awards were first established over 100 years ago and have been supporting students in Kirklees through grant funding for study trips since their foundation. These awards, set up by local philanthropists John Tinker and Edward Fisher in 1911, allow ambitious students to travel abroad for research, work experience or study and were established with the aim of broadening the minds of young people.
Administered by the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and local solicitors Eaton Smith LLP, the travelling scholarship is keeping the philanthropic spirit of the original trustees alive, and last year distributed funding worth more than £9000 to 20 students. The fund is highly competitive with applicants in 2014 doubling on the previous year. Applications will be judged on merit by an independent awarding panel representing the University, College, Chamber and Eaton Smith solicitors.
University of Huddersfield student Christopher Bywater moved to Florence in July 2013 for a year following his success in the awards, to undertake a placement at the European University Institute. “Due to having to move abroad for my placement, the Tinker Fisher Award proved invaluable to me, if it wasn’t for the grant, I don’t think I would have realistically been able to do it.
“I would like to say that if you have the opportunity like me to move abroad to work, if only for a small amount of time, do it and you won’t regret it. Finally I would like to thank everyone in charge of the Tinker Fisher Awards; The Chamber, Eaton Smith Solicitors and the University of Huddersfield, for giving me this valuable and unforgettable opportunity.
The closing date for applications is 17:00 on 13th March 2015. Application forms are available from both the University and the College or from rachel.dickie@mycci.co.uk.
