Three contractors appointed to £300 million Cumbria contract by BAE

Costain Group Plc, Morgan Sindall and Shepherd have been awarded the framework contracts from BAE systems to redevelop the submarine site in Barrow-in-Furness.

Work will start in early 2015 and is expected to take 8 years, employing 850 contractors at its peak time.

The programme will mean that the site is redeveloped to allow for the replacement of the Vanguard class submarines which is part of the UK’s renewal of its nuclear deterrent.

Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines, said: “Redevelopment of the site is fundamental to the future of our business and will ensure we stay at the forefront of submarine design, build, test and commissioning.”

Andrew Wyllie, chief executive of Costain, said “We are looking forward to a long term and successful relationship with BAE Systems, a major new customer for us.”
