On yer’ bike! ASDA and ABP Doncaster get the wheels in motion to raise vital funds

A team of cyclists from ASDA and ABP Doncaster, amongst other suppliers, took to the saddle this weekend to raise vital funds for a local family. Undertaking a 92-mile cycle challenge, the team dug in deep to help raise money to support Zach Kilkenny, a local six-year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with MoyaMoya disease - a progressive illness that affects one in one million children.

Starting at Doncaster on Saturday morning, the challenging 92-mile route took the riders across some of the county’s most dramatic landscapes, including Rotherham, Sheffield, Hathersage, Castleton and Mam Tor. Eight ABP employees joined the ASDA cycle challenge, which took just over 11 hours to complete.

ABP General Manager at Doncaster, Katharine Haenelt, commented: “Both ASDA and our team here at ABP Doncaster have shown a fantastic amount of support for Zach and his family. Zach’s mother Jane is one of our colleagues, so this is a cause very close to our hearts. The cycle challenge is one of many fund raising activities that have taken place to raise funds for Zach – we’re extremely proud of the cycling team and delighted to hear how successful the fundraising was!” Jane Kilkenny, Zach’s mother and PA at ABP Doncaster, commented: “Zach, I and the whole family are extremely grateful to the cycling team for all of the support they have given. Through various fund raising activities the ASDA and ABP Doncaster teams have raised over £20,000. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and would like to say a massive thank you to all those who have donated, help to raise awareness and have taken part in fundraising activities so far.”

Following a stroke whilst on holiday in Barcelona with his family last August, Zach was diagnosed with the progressive condition. Since then, the ASDA and ABP teams have hosted a number of fundraising events to raise money for Zach’s occupational therapy and future surgery, which will help reduce the likelihood of another stroke.
