Green award for Teesside CIC
A not-for-profit organisation, committed to bringing affordable energy to communities across the North East, has now been recognised as one of the greenest in the UK.
Teesside-based Community Energy Solutions (CES), which manages large area-based energy efficiency schemes across the region, has won a Green Apple Award 2014 for Environmental Best Practice.
The awards was presented at a glittering ceremony at the House of Commons on Monday (Nov 10), given to CES in recognition for its work to reduce domestic carbon emissions, tackle fuel poverty, facilitate urban regeneration and create new jobs thorough its Go Warm scheme at Stockton-on-Tees.
The awards, designed to recognise Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities are held annually by The Green Organisation with support from the Environment Agency and various other independent bodies.
The GoWarm scheme, running in partnership with Stockton Borough Council, was initially designed to deliver a range of energy efficiency measures, such as external wall insulation and new heating systems, to hundreds of targeted properties in the Parkfield, Town Centre, Mill Lane and Newtown wards.
.Since being launched in 2012 it has grown continuously and to date has tackled more than 2500 hard-to-treat private sector homes across the borough, making it the largest project of its kind in the UK.
The scheme, which has helped reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 300,000 tonnes overall, has also created more than 500 jobs and delivered a range of apprenticeship opportunities.
Despite many similar schemes in the country ending because of changes in Government funding, the Go Warm scheme is currently working on a further 866 homes across Stockton by installing a range of energy efficiency measures.
Karen Hindhaugh, Director of GoWarm, said: “The GoWarm project and its sister scheme in Middlesbrough have both proven extremely successful over the past few years and we’re delighted that this has been recognised by the Green Apple Awards 2014.
“The award is testament to the hard work of everyone involved with the project to date and we look forward to similar success in the months and years to come.”
