Sunderland University set to launch £200k broadcasting hub

The University of Sunderland is launching the mediaHUB, a digital publishing and broadcasting space, creating a new home for its award-winning Spark FM, Spark Magazine and student-run websites SRNews, Fashion North, Sportsbyte and Northern Lights.

The University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Media has invested more than £200k in the space, which is being officially opened on Tuesday, November 18.

The mediaHUB is a professional newsroom where teams running six digital platforms work together to produce and broadcast content for Wearside and the world.

With its bold colour scheme and state-of-the-art technology, the space has been strongly influenced by the offices of Google, Netflix and Amazon.

Moreover, the hub has a cloud-filled skyline, an aquarium lift and a garden-shed meeting room.

mediaHUB lead Jason Legget said: “The university is always keen to do things differently and create experiences for our students that break the mould. The mediaHUB does exactly that.

“It was important that the space didn’t feel like a classroom or education space but a professional workspace. We think we’ve achieved that.”

mediaHUB intern Victoria Bainbridge added: “We love the new office space, and the students who work with us on the different platforms think it’s amazing.

“There’s such a great atmosphere in here every day. People don’t have to be here, as work on the digital platforms is an extracurricular activity, but it’s amazing how busy we are each day.”
