Leading employer supports Christmas switch-on
Hexham’s largest employer – wood panel maker EGGER UK – joined forces with supermarket giant Tesco to launch the town’s Christmas festivities.
The company – that has more than 500 employees working in forest management, harvesting and wood panel manufacturing for the furniture and construction sectors – donated a 30 foot Sitka spruce from Kielder Forest that now stands in front of Hexham Abbey.
Choristers from the Abbey and the Hexham Middle School Band entertained hundreds of local residents during the lighting of the tree – performed by the town’s mayor Councillor Terry Robson and EGGER production director Tobias Zimmerman.
And due to the unavailability of his reindeer, Santa Claus arrived in Hexham for the event in a Tesco delivery van flanked by two elves who distributed sweets to children in the crowd.
