Milestone for £8.8 million Hillsborough college development

The £8.8 million upgrade to Hillsborough College has reached a milestone in its development, which is expected to be completed in August 2015.

It was given the go-ahead by Sheffield City Council, has received capital funding from the Skills Funding Agency and been designed by Race Cottam. Construction work began on the site at the end of September 2014.

Representatives from Clugston, the College’s appointed contractor, and employer partners Amey, Sheffield Theatres, Sheffield City Council, and creative communications agency Peter and Paul, took part in the milestone to mark the progress made.

Heather Smith, Principal of Hillsborough College, said: “We are training the next generation of talent in sectors identified for growth and working with employers to offer great careers opportunities to our students.

“I am pleased to celebrate the progress of our building upgrade with them and look forward to the next phase of our fantastic facilities with the completion of the extension’s steel frame.”

Steve Radcliffe, managing director, Clugston, said: “Clugston is delighted to be involved in what will be our third project for The Sheffield College.

“We are looking forward to working closely with the College and their team over the next nine months to deliver this excellent facility.”

The next phase of the project is to complete the steel frame of the main part of the extension, which will provide new creative and digital media, graphic design, music, journalism, photography and performing arts facilities.

The steel frame is due to be completed early in the New Year.

The upgrade includes launching new courses linked to areas of growth for the regional economy, building on more input from employers.
