Abbey College Manchester Student Awarded for Italian Masterpiece

Abbey College Manchester student, Zhenyu Yuan has been recognised regionally for his artwork after finishing first place in the college’s photography competition following a trip to Rome.

The talented photographer was recently tasked along with twenty of his fellow students to take a winning image on their three day visit to the Italian capital, taking inspiration from the Roman archaeology.

Students from the city-centre based independent college were presented with the opportunity to explore the wanders of Rome and capture some of the breathtaking sights the city has to offer such as the land mark Colosseum, MARCO gallery and the Vatican museum home to Michelangelo’s work.

The competition was judged by Rhona Delany-Willis, who has been an esteemed local photographer for the last 15 years. She selected Zhenyu’s work in a pool of highly competitive submissions due to the layered effect of his image and how it represented the passage of time in different aspects of the city.

The Wilmott Street resident’s artwork is now on display at the college’s new £100,000 landmark reception area and the student has been rewarded with high-street vouchers for his valiant effort.

Zhenyu, aged 19 who is currently studying A-level photography and BTEC Science said: “I am delighted that my work has been selected to take first place in the competition.

“I was overwhelmed to receive such positive comments from Rhona Delany-Willis, she has inspired me to continue to purse photography. I very much admire her work. “I would like to thank the College for providing us with such an unforgettable trip to Rome, an experience I will never forget.”

Liz Elam, Principal of Abbey College Manchester, commented:“ I would like to say congratulations to Zhenyu who produced a stunning piece of art. The calibre of work submitted by the students was extremely impressive.

“The students and staff had a remarkable time in Rome and have returned inspired with creative ideas for their coursework.”
