Treske plays key role in highlighting Bradford’s rich textile history

Treske, the leading North Yorkshire manufacturer of bespoke furniture, kitchens and church furnishings, has designed and supplied a brand-new oak storage cabinet for Bradford Cathedral.

The cabinet was specially commissioned to store safely a new series of vestments and altar frontals made to celebrate the wool heritage and industry of the city of Bradford and surrounding area.

The award-winning company, based in Thirsk, has been praised by the cathedral for “more than fulfilling the brief and providing exactly what was needed.”

Justin Bartlett, the owner and managing director of Treske, said: “We were delighted to hear that the cabinet has been so well received. This was an important project for us, as the design had to match the existing woodwork of the cathedral. In addition, the cabinet houses some very special and symbolic vestments, reflecting the rich textile heritage of the city.”

Canon Sam Corley of Bradford Cathedral explained: “I am delighted by the new cabinet. From the initial enquiry through to delivery, the service was excellent. On a tight budget and even tighter timescale, Treske more than fulfilled the brief; they just got exactly what I was after”.

He continued: “Bradford Cathedral is currently developing a scheme to celebrate the textile heritage of the Bradford region. A key element of the scheme was the creation of new altar frontals and vestments.

“Working with Polly Meynell, a professional textile designer, and using fabrics produced or sold in Bradford - both Yorkshire wools and Asian silks - the Cathedral is producing a full range of altar frontals and vestments to celebrate the wool and textile heritage of Bradford.

“Links have been made with producers in the city and district (including Hainsworths of Stanningley and James Hare Ltd of Leeds) and many of the materials used in production were produced or sold within Bradford. The projected cost of designing and producing the items is £48,500 and this has been raised in full,” he added.

Treske is now the leading manufacturer and supplier of church furniture in the country, having undertaken ecclesiastical projects for high-profile churches across the UK, including Ripon Cathedral; St George’s Chapel, Windsor; and St Martin-in-the-Fields in central London.
