Outraged former CityLink employees protest outside Rotherham depot

Former employees of the now defunct delivery firm CityLink have claimed to be owed thousands of pounds following the company’s collapse.

According to The Star, around 15 former workers held a RMT-organised protest outside the firm’s Rotherham depot, setting company uniforms alight.

Of the 34 people previously employed at the Rotherham depot, 31 have been made immediately redundant, with three retained to assist with winding down operations.

Drivers said they had worked for City Link for years but were ‘forced’ to become self-employed two years ago. They said the business failure will hit around 15 to 20 self-employed drivers in South Yorkshire.

Father-of-four Matthew Tingle, 39, from Ecclesall, worked for City Link for 20 years. He said he was owed £4,000.

He said: “They let us work all Christmas knowing they had no intention of paying us. I have got no livelihood and no money coming in.”

Andrew Hall, 42, from Kimberworth, said his wife gave birth to their fourth child just before Christmas and he is owed between £2,500 and £3,000.

“I feel angry about what they have done to us. They had us working 15 to 16 hours a day knowing we weren’t going to get paid.”

Thousands of staff across the country found out on Christmas Day the company had gone into administration, with 2,356 job losses confirmed on New Year’s Eve.
