Yorkshire discount chain reports bumper Christmas
Poundstrecher, the Yorkshire discount chain, has announced its most successful Christmas ever.
The company, which has its headquarters at Deighton, Huddersfield, saw total sales soar by 14.76% in the five weeks to December 30 with like-for-like sales up by 10.39%.
Poundstretcher’s seasonal offerings tempted in more than 7m shoppers – a 10% rise in footfall year on year – with shoppers particularly driven by offers on groceries and a strong range of seasonal lines. Food sales increased by a massive 47.7%.
Clothing sales shot up by 25.8%, with affordable gifts like socks and scarves flying off the shelves.
Managing director Ian York said: “The leading business growth focus for us is to do what we do best – continue to sell big brand food, toiletries and household goods at great prices.
“We’ve also looked to give customers incredible value on homewares and this breadth of offering is really being welcomed by cash-conscious shoppers who shop around now for life’s essentials.”
Poundstretcher has 409 stores in the UK with 15 stores opened in the current financial year alone. The Pet Hut, which shares 83 UK locations with Poundstretcher, also experienced an excellent end to 2014 by reporting a 70% sales growth.
Poundstretcher, which employs about 6,000 people UK-wide, was formed in 1981 and is billed as the UK’s leading multi-priced discount retailer of branded food and toiletry goods.
It offers more than 5,000 products – including kitchenware, bedding, bathroom products, furniture, electric goods, pet care products and children’s toys – at prices ranging from less than 49p to £150.
