£14 million Scarborough water park kickstarted by council

Work on a much-anticipated Scarborough water park is set to begin after a cash injection from the council.

Construction on the site was halted by developers Benchmark Leisure in 2009 after being hit by the recession, until they received a loan of £9 million from Scarborough Borough Council.

Plans for the water park were first released in 2005 and in September 2013 the council decided by a single vote to provide the loan for the park.

The water attraction, which the developer says could attract about 500,000 visitors a year, is to be built on a 13 hectare site of the Burniston Road car park.

The £14 million North Bay park, which will include indoor and outdoor pools as well as a spa, should take about 14 months to complete and is scheduled to open by Easter 2016 according to the BBC.

The development is part of the £150 million Sands development in the North Yorkshire seaside town.

The developers said the money loaned by the council should be repaid within five years of opening.
