Cockermouth technology company win £1 million contract to clean up Fukushima nuclear plant

A Cockermouth technology company has assisted Japan’s Fukushima power plant in its clean up operation.

Createc’s contract with the nuclear power plant is worth around £1 million.

Based at Derwent Mills Commercial Park, the company developed a kit which detects radiation sources via thermal images.

The N-visage technology was used at the plant as part of its decommissioning project after the tsunami in 2011.

Technical manager for the project, Chris Woolhouse, said: “The N-visage kit lets you see the radiation by producing a scan and a map that looks like a thermal image which shows the amount of radiation in an area.

“The beauty of it is it can be deployed remotely and sent to areas where people can’t go.

“A team of four of us went out to the site to operate the kit and train others at the plant to use it.

“There is a huge sense of achievement working on a project like this. Having technology developed here in West Cumbria by a small company which had a major impact on a complex project like that is unbelievable.

“We’ve done what other large companies weren’t able to do,” according to the Time and Star.
