New Year volunteering for Autism Care

Promoting independent living is a priority for Autism Spectrum Disorder specialists Goldcrest House as their service users volunteering programme announces a success for the New Year.

Andrew Hughes, service user at the home, has successfully secured a much wanted role helping a business he knows very well – Goldcrest House.

Helping Goldcrest House with their housekeeping is keeping Andrew busy as he helps create the weekly shopping list then makes the trip to the supermarket to purchase the items and make relevant substitutions at his discretion.

Practising what they preach Goldcrest have embraced the volunteer programme created by their service users; which offers help to local people and businesses with domestic tasks and chores they haven’t time or capacity to complete.

Eileen Smale, activities co-ordinator at Goldcrest House says: “This sounds like such a simple task to most, but this is a huge achievement for Andrew and a task he thoroughly enjoys. Andrew is enjoying the opportunity to make use of taught life skills such as shopping, keeping to a budget, making choices; and it’s helping him grow in confidence as he overcomes his anxieties to become more independent.”

Based on Boothferry Road Goldcrest House is a centre of excellence dedicated to addressing the individual needs of adults over 18 affected by Autistic Spectrum Disorder and learning difficulties. It is a residential home that provides long-term integrated specialist day and residential care to meet the varied needs of those who access the service 52 weeks a year; its aim is to be the UK’s quality service of choice.
