UrbanWind nets hat-trick of turbine deals

Renewable energy expert UrbanWind is set to start work on fully funded turbine projects worth £3 million in total, after starting 2015 with a hat-trick of deals across the UK.

The company is erecting its latest turbine technology for farm businesses on three rural sites in England, Scotland and Wales, as the sector’s appetite grows for the benefits renewable energy can bring.

Work will start shortly to erect Northern Power Systems 100kW turbines on sites in Cambridgeshire, and Pembrokeshire.

And a third EWT 500kW turbine will be erected by UrbanWind’s expert team on a farm in Fife, Scotland.

The total investment across the sites is £3m and all three state-of-the-art turbines will start generating electricity by the end of May

The separate projects have been made possible through UrbanWind’s unique finance models for landowners.

The Glasgow-based company says that 2015 is already looking to be a strong year for its innovative funded technology – with the agriculture and business sectors leading the way.

Paul McCullagh, CEO of UrbanWind, said: “We have started the year very strongly, with a growing number of projects across the UK confirmed or in the pipeline.

“We are starting to bring an increasing number of wind turbine technology plans off the drawing board and into reality on sites across the country. It really is fantastic news.

“And we are also finding a growing appetite for medium-scale wind turbine technology from landowners and agricultural businesses in particular.

“They realise that it can help them generate valuable additional revenue streams, reduce their high energy bills, and realise the ambition they have to utilise their land assets further.

“We’re also in advanced talks with a number of major utility companies and commercial operators across a variety of different sectors.”

UrbanWind currently has around 80 potential turbine sites around the UK in the planning process, with others being assessed for technical and commercial viability prior to release into the planning process . It is also looking to identify and develop more fully fund sites – especially consented sites - across the UK, as it continues to roll out its expansion plans.

Work on the Fife project will get underway next month (Feb), while the two Northern Power Systems turbines will be commenced in March.
