Ponteland manufacturer recruits engineering apprentice from Ponteland School

Lawson Fuses was originally founded in 1938 specialising in the design, development and manufacture of HRC low voltage fuses. Based from its site in Ponteland, it has been a committed local employer for many years.

In February 2014, the Manufacturing Manager of Lawson Fuses enquired about the possibility of recruiting an engineering apprentice to support the Site Production Engineer. The MD of the company, being a loyal employer for the Ponteland area really wanted to give that opportunity to a young person from Ponteland who went to Ponteland Community High School.

This was never going to be an easy task for the TNT Training Officers and Recruitment Team, but after a number of enquiries direct into the local school and an intensive recruitment campaign in the surrounding area, TNT managed to identify Jack Wright as an ideal candidate.

In May 2014, Ponteland school leaver Jack had his interview with the Manufacturing Manager and Site Production Engineer and was subsequently offered the position of Engineering Apprentice.

Lawson Fuses invited TNT to their facility early last year. During the visit it was very clear that Lawson Fuses are a very successful and loyal Ponteland employer. TNT analysed the site’s engineering activities and agreed on a framework whereby an apprentice would be exposed to both mechanical and electrical maintenance.

Chris Milne, TNT Training Officer commented “One of the key criteria for Lawson Fuses was that the successful candidate should be a school leaver from Ponteland School. Once we had received the full brief, we then started a targeted recruitment campaign for Lawson Fuses. Jack applied for the position back in February, had his TNT tests at the end of April and within a few weeks had secured his apprenticeship at Lawson Fuses”.
