NE experts exceed expectations with rapid growth

A County Durham specialist maintenance firm is ahead of its financial expectations with a 30% year on year increase.

Darlington-based Stone Technical Services (STS) has seen continued growth across all of its divisions with turnover now exceeding £2.5 million. Managers expect this to reach £3 million by the end of 2015.

STS is a leader in the specialist field of historic and high level maintenance and restoration, as well as lightning protection and industrial steeplejack services. The company comprises four divisions: - STS Lightning Protection, STS Restoration, STS Maintenance and Facilities Management and STS Conservation.

In the last year, staff numbers have increased by five, reaching 39, and the business plans to create a further five new roles this year as well as a number of apprenticeship opportunities.

STS’s growth comes as the company continues to secure high profile contracts- much of it repeat business with large organisations- all over the UK, as well as being able to operate at 100% capacity all year round thanks to its fully-skilled workforce who can work in all weather.

Since the start of the year, STS has secured projects with a range of organisations including: -the National Trust- working at Ormesby Hall, Cragside in Northumberland and Penshaw Monument; English Heritage carrying out surveys at Clifford’s Tower in York; Lingfield Point in Darlington working on their art installation; Durham County Council for winter maintenance work; the NHS on various chimney inspection projects; Leeds City Council carrying out surveys on Merrion House and the Merrion Shopping Centre; and York Museums Trust carrying out restoration on structures across the historic city.

MD of STS, Dave Stone, said: “The last year has been a period of steady growth and we are now ahead of our expectations. We can attribute much of this to our growing workforce as we can now take on more and larger projects nationwide. In addition, our reputation as a reliable, full service company means that we are getting a lot of repeat business.

“As a progressive company, we plan to continually re-invest in STS, creating opportunities for local people as we grow. 2015 has got off to a promising start with a wide range of projects meaning that all of our divisions are thriving.”

STS is one of the UK’s leading high level maintenance and lightning protection companies, working on buildings such as Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Courts of Justice and Lumley Castle, as well as for organisations including Hilton Hotels, BSkyB, Sir Robert McAlpine and UK-wide local authorities.
