New York taxi and United Airlines land at Newcastle Airport

The North East has hosted a unique visit from a New York taxi company and United Airlines Cabin Crew, to celebrate the United Airlines route from Newcastle to New York which launches on 23 May 2015.

United Airlines flight attendants James Kelly and Lulu Riedstra greeted Leon McQuaid, Newcastle International Airport Aviation Development Manager, at the airport before showing off an iconic black and yellow New York taxi around famous North East landmarks such as the historic Alnwick Castle.

The frequency of the service will be five times weekly. It will be Newcastle’s first scheduled nonstop transAtlantic service.

Flight UA159 will depart Newcastle daily except Wednesday and Thursday at 9:10 a.m., arriving at New York/Newark at 12:00 p.m. the same day.

The return flight, UA160, will depart New York/Newark daily except Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:20 p.m., arriving in Newcastle at 7:30 a.m. the following day (all times local).

Flight times will be seven hours 50 minutes westbound and seven hours 10 minutes eastbound.

The flights will be operated by Boeing 757-200 aircraft with a total of 169 seats, 16 flat-bed seats in United BusinessFirst and 153 in United Economy, including 45 Economy Plus seats with added legroom and increased personal space.

Chief Executive at Newcastle International Airport, David Laws, recently spoke of his delight in securing the New York route with United airlines.

At the beginning of the year he said: “2015 will be a year of celebration as enter our 80th anniversary year. We have a number of exciting things planned, so watch this space!

“Recently we achieved our long term goal of securing a trans-Atlantic service to New York with United Airlines. We’re delighted that this will begin to operate in May 2015, tickets are on sale now and we’d encourage the North East travelling public to get behind this route and book up for summer 2015.”
