Ashford railway station in Surrey to get £60k upgrade

Ashford’s railway station in Surrey is expected to receive up to £60k to improve disabled access and resurface the approach road.

The Department for Transport Access for All Scheme have made the money available to improve the appearance of the station, as well as making it more accessible for disabled users.

South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance and Surrey County Council have teamed up with Spelthorne Borough Council to resurface the roads and pavements in Station Approach, improve lighting and signage, and build a new accessible ramp.

Cllr Joanne Sexton, ward councillor for Ashford North and Stanwell South said: “The appearance of Ashford Train Station has been an ongoing concern for local residents so I was determined to lead the project and coordinate the improvement work with the relevant organisations.

“The station is the gateway to Ashford and we hope that it will help attract visitors to the town and provide local residents with the type of station they expect and deserve.”

Richard Kempton, stakeholder support manager for South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance, said: “We are delighted to be working on the improvements to Ashford Station.

“We are also relocating the ticket machine to a more suitable position and the painting of the ticket office. We would like to thank passengers for their patience whilst these improvements continue.”

The work is expected to be completed by the end of March.
