445 jobs at risk in Selby as fresh fruit factory closes after losing Asda contract
Yorkshire Fresh Fruit, a Selby factory which supplies supermarkets is to close, putting 445 jobs at risk, after it lost a crucial contract with Asda.
Employees at Yorkshire Fresh Fruit (YFF) in Camblesforth, near Selby, were told the news by Icelandic parent company Bakkovor on Friday.
Bakkovor said it was “an unsettling and difficult time for everyone at YFF”.
In 2012, the firm closed its nearby English Village Salads business after it also lost work with Asda.
According to the BBC, a spokesman said the group was entering a 45-day consultation period with all 445 employees at the Selby site “with regard to a proposed closure of the YFF business following the loss of a major customer”.
It said the company would work hard with union Unite in an attempt to identify whether any workers could be redeployed.
The group said its New Primebake bread-making factory at Barton-on-Humber, North Lincolnshire, was not affected.
